Which Barrette Models This Applies To

The Builder Series, Pro Series, and Elite Series each used different hardware packages, frame depths, and glazing bead profiles, so a sash balance from a 2012 Builder Series double-hung won’t fit a 2018 Pro Series casement. Check the spacer bar between the glass panes or the edge of the sash for a stamped series mark; if that’s worn off, measure the frame depth (3-1/4″ vs. 3-1/2″ vs. 4-9/16″) and the visible glass dimensions to narrow it down.

Signs Your Barrette Windows & Doors Is Failing

• The sash drops or won’t stay raised. This points to a failed coil balance or broken pivot bar. In Fort Lauderdale’s humidity, the nylon components in older Barrette balances degrade faster than the metal springs, so the window feels heavy even though the spring itself is intact.
• Visible moisture or fog between glass panes. The insulated glass unit (IGU) seal has failed. South Florida’s thermal cycling, afternoon thunderstorms followed by direct sun, accelerates this; a unit facing west typically fails 3-5 years sooner than a north-facing match.
• The door sticks at the top or bottom of the swing. Hinge screws have backed out of the composite frame, or the hinge has sagged under the weight of impact-rated glass. Barrette’s heavier impact units put more load on the top hinge than non-impact designs.
• Cranking difficulty on casement or awning units. The operator gears have stripped or the arm is binding. Salt air corrodes the zinc-plated operators faster than inland installs; we see this regularly in Harbor Beach and Las Olas Isles properties within a mile of the water.
• Chalky residue on the frame or seal. The PVC cap stock is UV-degrading. This is cosmetic until the substrate beneath is exposed, but once the white layer is gone, the frame becomes brittle and more susceptible to impact damage.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground for Barrette owners. You can check the series mark, measure the visible glass, and photograph the hardware - that saves us both time when you call. You can also clean the weep holes (the small slots at the bottom of the frame) with a piece of wire; clogs there cause water to back up and look like a seal failure when it isn’t.

Where DIY goes wrong: removing a sash with a failed balance can send it dropping unexpectedly; the edge weight on a 36″ x 72″ double-hung is enough to crack the glass or pinch fingers. Replacing an IGU requires breaking the glazing bead without damaging the frame, and impact-rated units are heavy enough that two people with proper support are non-negotiable.
